Social Responsibility

The generosity of others is at the core of the Y’s existence as a nonprofit. It is only through the support of our hundreds of thousands of volunteers and public and private donors that we are able to support and give back to the communities we engage.

STATEWIDE PIONEERING HEALTHIER COMMUNITIES -MARION

Pioneering Healthier Communities (PHC) is the Y’s signature initiative of Activate America that focuses on policy and environmental change in communities to promote healthy lifestyles. The state based model focuses on communities with some of the highest childhood obesity rates in the country. Supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the aim of this work is to address the childhood obesity epidemic through policy, system and environmental changes that will have implications for communities and the nation. Communities in the following states are participating in Statewide PHC: Connecticut, Kentucky, Tennessee, Illinois, Michigan and Ohio.

Marion joined Statewide PHC in late 2010 with the coalition’s work beginning in early 2011. In August, 2011 PHC Marion adopted a comprehensive Community Action Plan to help Marion County become an amazing place to live by promoting healthy eating and physical activity throughout our communities.  For the full Community Action Plan, please click here.
